Saturday Academy
The Frederick A.O. Schwarz Children’s Center, in partnership with the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, presents Saturday Academy for students in grades 8 – 12.
Saturday Academy at the Museum of the City of New York is a free, elective six-week program for students interested in American History or SAT preparation. Best of all, there’s no homework or testing and all course materials are provided! Students may enroll in one or two courses a semester. After completing all course requirements, participants receive a Certificate of Achievement.

The New York City Waterfront in American History
Instructors: Madeleine Appell, M.A. in Art Education and Supervision / Administration, CUNY and Ellen Piccolo, M.F.A. Brooklyn College, Artist and Art Teacher
Available for students in grades 8 – 10.
New York City’s prime waterfront location has allowed it develop into one of the world’s greatest and most diverse cities. Students will explore the historical significance of the harbor as a domestic and international gateway and discuss topics such as commerce, immigration, recreation, transportation, and aesthetics. The class will collaborate on a mural of the New York City waterfront to illustrate its role in our nation’s history and students’ own ideas for the future of the area. Museum exhibitions will be utilized for historical and visual reference.
Cinema and American History
Instructor: Oliver Pattenden, M.A. in Film and Television Studies, University of East Anglia
Available for students in grades 10 – 12.
Some of the most popular and successful movies have been based on historical events. Whether films dramatize specific events or use the past as a backdrop, movie plot lines have incorporated history since before they used sound. In this class, students will learn about different types of historical films and how American history has been represented in the movies. In particular, students will view movies as both a unique medium for studying the past and a source of historical myths and misrepresentations. Clips from various films will be shown and discussed in class sessions.
Kaplan SAT Skills
Instructor: Kaplan Test Prep and Admissions
Available for students in grades 10 – 12.
With planning and preparation, students can maximize their efficiency on standardized tests and their chances of college acceptance. This Kaplan SAT Skills course is designed to teach students to use key Kaplan strategies while taking the exam. Topics will include critical reading, math, and writing skills.
